Peter Thiel and new markets

Peter Thiel (1967-now) is an German-American entrepreneur best known for co-founding PayPal and being an early investor in Facebook. The rest of this post is some quotes from Theil.

1. "Every moment in business happens only once. The next Bill Gates will not build an operating system. The next Larry Page won't make a search engine. And the next Mark Zuckerberg won't create a social network. If you are copying these guys, you aren't learning from them." (Zero to One, 2014)

2. "Much better than fighting for scraps in existing markets is to create and own new ones." (

3. "There are many more secrets in the world that are waiting to be found. The question of how many secrets exist in our world is roughly equivalent to how many start ups people should start." (

4. "I think the future is something that always has to be thought of in relatively concrete terms - and it has to be different from the present." (Peter Thiel on 'The Straussian Moment', Hoover Institution, 2019)

5. "The fate of our world may depend on the effort of a single person who builds or propagates the machinery of freedom that makes the world safe for capitalism." (The Education of a Libertarian, Cato Unbound, 2009)
